Events Designers
are hiding other talents !

In the meeting and event industry, the magicians are the ones designing, producing and managing events for corporate and private clients. Those people who are very often behind the scenes are called the “Event Manager“.  As much as their role seems insignifiant and sometimes invisible to events delegates, they are the ones who, very often, come up with unique ideas to make events memorable and full of emotions.

From a participant standpoint, the venue is the one making an event successful (or not), nevertheless, the “Event Manager“ is the one and only Chef d’Orchestre behind the scene that will ensure a complete and successful coordination of all aspects of the event. Sometimes, they even take care of off site functions in addition to managing the project at the main venue. This is why, this tribe is more and more called Events Designers - but we call them Magicians.

But before everything else, those magicians are people serving people, and sometimes we don’t know them well enough. We don’t know about their particularities nor about their hidden talents !

As the Founder and CEO of an International Luxury Event Management Company, my team or myself are attending some MICE (meeting industry specific) events where we meet with other agencies and also with pre-selected venues from around the world. We find it extremely efficient because in the course of three or four days, we have the opportunity to share ideas, news and projects, but also to discover several dozen of new potential destinations and venues for our upcoming customer events. One very well organised one is the M&I Forums organised by World Wide Events. Beside the one to one meeting sessions, we happen to attend very nice diners at very nice local venues, and here after comes my point.

Last week in Muscat (Sultanate of Oman), our last day’s gala dinner took place at the Al Bustan Palace, a beautiful Ritz Carlton property. After an impressive outdoor dinner, the General Manager offered some of us, to receive a private site inspection of the hotel with some of her sales staff. Despite being way after 10 PM, we enjoyed receiving a private visit of the rooms, suites and some other key areas of the building.

While waiting for our host in the majestic lobby, one of my niche market industry peer and friend, Daria Guristrimba, sat down at the piano and gave us a very private performance of two her favorite partitions. Needless to say that all of us in the small group were blown away and we could not blink an eye until she was done. This is when I realised that we know our friends and industry peers  pretty well, but never well enough. Many of them have hidden talents that deserve standing ovations and a lot of respect in addition to the great and hard work that they put in creating unforgettable emotions for their customers and their delegates.

Next time you deal with an Event Designer, think about it and look at him/her with huge respect !
